| No water rides, no theme Parks, NO TRAFFIC! Located in tiny, historic Tehuacana, Texas (pop. 307), our cottage is convenient to large city amenities. Grocery stores and restaurants are just ten minutes away. And large city shopping, malls, and movies are just 45 minutes away. Yet the location is quiet enough at night to hear a pin drop amid the crickets and fireflies. Tehuacana is located on the highest point between Dallas and Houston, and is an unspoiled Texas prairie town set among the cowboys and bluebonnets of central Texas. It has one of the five remaining post offices from the Texas Revolution, and is home to the original campus of Trinity University - now in San Antonio. The ten-acre campus, located in the center of town, boasts the enormous, four-story limestone administration building built in 1860. A vista of five counties can be seen from the bell tower! Besides evening strolls through our charming village, true nature lovers will marvel at our wildflowers during five months of the year (please attend the annual Bluebonnet Festival in April!), marvel at our uninterrupted night sky (the finest natural observatory in Central Texas); and they'll be kept busy by our teeming native bird life. Bicyclers have long known of our excellent rolling paved highways. (This IS the prairie) slicing through some of the most unspoiled panoramas of fields and flowers). You'll be able to witness the true Texas in a unblemished, undeveloped cowboy town that continues to hide from all but the most determined history and nature bluffs. Within a 30-minute drive, the fishing is excellent at Lake Mexia (Mexia), Lake Limestone (Groesbeck), and Richland-Chambers Reservoir (Corsicana). Waco, home of Baylor University, is only a 45-minute drive, and offers museums, movies, shopping, and other attractions that a large city has to offer. For airport access, Dallas is less than two hours away, with its international airport and other amenities offered by a major metropolitan area. Down the highway and 12 miles away is the well-known Fort Parker historic pioneer restoration. Tours are available of the fort along with its park and grounds. While in the city limits of Tehuacana, see beautiful Love Springs and the oldest home in Limestone County (by appointment). Visit Walker Cutting Horses, and see world-class horse training. Drive through Floyd's Drive (by appointment), and see the highest point between Dallas-Ft. Worth and Houston. Have one of the best hamburgers in the county at Betty's General Store, as you take in the museum-like atmosphere of her store - located in the old bank downtown. Known for its springs and high vantage point since prehistoric eras, Tehuacana was originally spelled 'Tewakona' in Texas Republic days - and was named for the now-extinct Indian tribe of the same name. Indian artifacts are still unearthed and many extensive collections of their relics exist. The cemetery, containing historic markers, is located on the bluff - and is second to none for its beauty and history. Set deep into Tehuacana, "Texas Gothic" offers the most original retreat available in extreme northern Limestone County. With its board-and-batten sides, antique windows, and cut-tin ornamentation, "Texas Gothic" resembles a turn-of-the-century cottage, but is in reality a brand-new structure with all modern systems. The downstairs features beautiful hardwood floors, 9'2" ceilings with fans, a 9' door from the 1860's, authentic beadboard wainscoting, a full bath, and a full laundry. It also offers an extremely accesible, fully-equipped kichen, a dining area for four, a living area with a full-size futon bed, and a small sun room that opens onto the very private back parch - which is perfect for outdoor barbecuing with the grill provided. Amenities include a color TV with dishTV cable, and a DVD/CD player. Head up the tiny stairs (16 inches wide at one point - a possible consideration before inquiring); and in our loft find a full-size bed, a small study, plenty of closet space, storage, and another full bath with shower. Come hide away in Tehuacana, and watch the sunsets from the double rocker on the front porch, or from the picnic table on the back porch. As you listen to birds and distant coyotes, you'll understand why you made the decision! |
